Paperchase x Melissa Donne Studio
I had the absolute delight of working on a collaboration last Spring for Tesco Paperchase. I was given the task of creating artwork for their Mother’s Day range which would cover a large number of products including stationery, gifts and greetings cards. I absolutely leapt at the chance and yesterday it finally launched in stores across the country!
Paperchase has always been one of my favourite brands so when it appeared in Tesco stores I was so excited. To design a range for them is a dream come true.
It was a collaborative project through and through. At the start of the project it was clear that my style would be central to the range and so I got the chance to create work which felt so like me! I injected my usual love of colour and we came up with a beautiful dreamy and ethereal colour palette - I knew I always wanted a pop of neon pink so was delighted to see how vibrant this came out! It really adds something bold to the collection with pieces that are elegant but still pack a punch and aim to spread lots of joy.
My work for this project included making surface patterns and illustrations and I created abstract florals, a still life and bird with details including stars which have been recreated in beautiful gold foil. We started with a colour palette - a mix of deep greens for the leaves and delicate colours for the florals but with the addition of a neon spot colour which would make the designs pop - I’ve always loved how Paperchase as a brand has used neon accents, so I knew I wanted this to be a feature in this range.
I began the project by creating a number of rough sketches based on a brief that called for a strong floral theme but also a motif that was not directly floral (the bird illustration) to give the range a different focal point. When I started to add colour everything began to come together and we started to visualise how the end products may begin to look. The Art Director then worked her magic to design a huge range of products featuring my artwork. When I received the samples I was blown away!
Some of my favourite products include the gift bags with scalloped details, the mug and coaster set which features a wavy handle as seen in one of the illustrations in the range.
Every piece of artwork has been infused into little details - sticky notes in the shape of an orange, floral motifs on pages of a planner and gift bag tags featuring the bird illustration - each product has so many unique details which make the range so special.
The range is available in selected stores whilst stocks last. I hope you get a chance to see some items and enjoy them as much as I did creating them!
